From Vine to Wine

Pend d' Oreille Winery Production

Wine Production for the Pend d’Oreille Winery took a big step in 2013 by relocating to a hangar out at the Sandpoint Airport.  This move greatly streamlined and increased our efficiency along with having all the production and wine cellar under one roof.  With a backdrop of the beautiful Selkirk Mountains and private aircraft arriving and departing throughout the day, we couldn’t be happier with our selection.  We source grapes from many vineyards within the Yakima Valley, Columbia Valley, Horseheaven Hills, Wahluke Slope and Royal Slope AVA’s.  We maintain valued relationships with our grape growers and visit vineyards regularly during the harvest season to assess fruit and determine optimal harvest dates.

Our wine is a great combination of hard work of our wine makers and vineyard relationships. For the wine to gain premium quality, we use only the best grapes harvested and hand-picked.

All of our grapes are hand-harvested and transported back to the winery within 24 hours of coming off the vine.  Our red grapes are destemmed and crushed into fermenters that we hand-punch twice daily during fermentations.  Once fermentations are done they get pressed and pumped into barrels where they spend roughly 18-20 months barrel aging.

White wine grapes go directly into the press once they are received from the vineyards.  Juice is then fermented primarily in temperature controlled stainless steel tanks to maintain attractive flavors and aromatics.  White wine fermentations can take up to 8 weeks before the process of stabilizing, fining and filtering occur prior to bottling.
